Major Record Labels Sue AI Startups Over Unauthorized Use of Artist Music

A group of prominent record labels has filed lawsuits against two AI startups, accusing them of using copyrighted music without permission to train their systems. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has taken legal action on behalf of labels like Sony Music Entertainment, UMG Recordings, and Warner Records, targeting AI companies Suno and Uncharted Labs, the latter being the developer behind Udio.

Udio gained notoriety last month with its AI-generated track “BBL Drizzy,” which went viral amidst a feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The company, founded by former Google DeepMind researchers, aims to simplify the creation of emotionally resonant music. Udio recently secured $10 million in funding. Suno, which raised $125 million last month, allows users to create songs with minimal prompts, utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT for lyrics and titles.

Neither Udio nor Suno have commented on the lawsuits.

RIAA CEO Mitch Glazier emphasized the importance of these lawsuits in a statement, stating they are essential to ensure the ethical and legal development of generative AI systems. He stressed that unlicensed services exploit artists’ work without consent or compensation, undermining the music industry.

In April, over 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, J Balvin, Jon Bon Jovi, and Katy Perry, signed an open letter urging AI developers and digital music platforms to stop using AI to infringe on artists’ rights.

The lawsuit against Udio asserts that generative AI tools can benefit music creation if developed with copyright owners’ permission. However, irresponsible development without respect for copyright laws poses a significant threat to the music industry and cultural quality.

The lawsuit against Suno highlights that the platform’s 10 million users generate music files that compete with copyrighted recordings, with no credit or compensation to the original artists. These files have even appeared on major streaming services, further complicating the issue.
