Meta Nears Resolution of Outage Affecting Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta has announced that it is close to resolving a significant technical issue causing widespread outages on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The company acknowledged the disruption on Wednesday, stating, “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” Meta Newsroom posted on X.

Both Instagram and WhatsApp confirmed the outages via X, with many users reporting difficulties accessing the apps. The outage, which lasted for over three hours, prompted a surge in reports of issues on outage tracking site Downdetector. By the afternoon, Instagram had logged nearly 70,000 reports, while Facebook saw up to 105,000, and WhatsApp had about 12,500.

By 5:30 pm EST, Meta reported it had resolved “99% of the issue” and was close to restoring full service.

This outage is among several widespread tech disruptions in 2024, including major service interruptions like the Microsoft Outlook and Teams outage in November. While not as far-reaching, Meta’s platforms, which collectively had 3.98 billion monthly active users in 2023, are central to global social media use, making the disruption significant for users worldwide.
