Meta’s Threads App Rolls Out First Big Batch of Updates

Meta’s Twitter competitor, Threads, has introduced a significant update to the app, aiming to maintain its momentum since its launch two weeks ago.

The latest features include a translation button and a dedicated tab in users’ activity feed, showing who has followed them. Cameron Roth, a software engineer working on Threads, announced the updates, assuring that they will be available to iOS Threads users by the end of Tuesday.

Threads experienced a surge in popularity with over 100 million user sign-ups in less than a week after its launch. However, some users have expressed the need for more updates and features, such as direct messaging and a robust search function, similar to those available on other platforms like Twitter.

According to web traffic analysis firm Similarweb, user engagement on Threads has slightly declined since its initial week. In response, Meta executives have expressed their intentions to enhance the app to encourage sustained user activity.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently stated in a Threads post that the early growth of the app was remarkable, with tens of millions of people returning daily. He emphasized the focus for the rest of the year will be on improving the app’s basics and retention.

In addition to the translation button and activity feed tab, Tuesday’s update also enables users to subscribe and receive notifications from accounts they don’t follow. A new “+”” button allows users to follow new accounts from replies on a post. The update also includes bug fixes and other improvements.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and the one overseeing Threads, has hinted at additional plans for the app, including introducing a desktop version, a feed that only displays accounts a user follows, and an edit button. These potential features are expected to further enhance the user experience and engagement on Threads.
