Microsoft and Asus Unveil ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X: Windows 11 Handhelds for Multi-Platform Gaming
Microsoft and Asus have officially launched two new handheld gaming consoles – the ROG Xbox Ally and the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X – after months of speculation and leaks. Designed for gamers who want access to multiple platforms on the go, both devices run on Windows 11 and support games from Steam, Epic Games, Game Pass, and the Microsoft Store.
The devices introduce a new full-screen interface called the “Xbox Experience for Handheld,” which prioritizes performance by reducing background tasks typically associated with Windows. Microsoft describes it as a hub for an “aggregated gaming library” that also includes access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and modding support.

Both handhelds are equipped with 7-inch 1080p IPS displays offering a 120Hz refresh rate, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and 500 nits of brightness. Key features shared across both models include dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and upgradable storage. Each also comes with two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports (one with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0), a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The higher-end Xbox Ally X adds Thunderbolt 4 support.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally (white variant) is powered by AMD’s new Ryzen Z2 A chip, supported by 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 60Wh battery. It weighs 670 grams – comparable to Valve’s Steam Deck.

The ROG Xbox Ally X (black variant) steps things up with the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of faster LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a larger 1TB SSD, and impulse triggers for enhanced gaming control. It weighs slightly more at 715 grams.
An Xbox button located to the left of the screen brings up the Xbox Game Bar overlay, enabling quick access to chats, settings, and game switching. Microsoft also revealed plans to introduce a program that will identify Windows games optimized for handheld play – similar to the Steam Deck’s Deck Verified system.
While pricing details remain under wraps, Microsoft confirmed the handhelds will launch during the 2025 holiday season. The Xbox Ally X is positioned as a premium option, with reports suggesting a price tag north of $1,000.
