Microsoft unveils AI assistant Dragon Copilot for doctors

Microsoft Launches AI Assistant ‘Dragon Copilot’ to Support Doctors

Microsoft has unveiled a new artificial intelligence assistant, Dragon Copilot, designed to help doctors reduce administrative tasks and focus more on patient care.

The AI assistant merges Microsoft’s existing Dragon Medical One speech recognition software with the DAX Copilot tool, which records and documents doctor-patient conversations. By integrating these technologies, Dragon Copilot aims to streamline medical documentation and improve workflow efficiency in healthcare.

According to Microsoft, the tool can quickly extract medical information, automatically generate clinical notes, suggest medication recommendations, and produce visit summaries.

“Thanks to this technology, doctors will be able to focus more on their patients and less on their computers, ultimately improving the quality of healthcare,” said Dr. David Ryu, Microsoft’s Vice President of Global Healthcare.

A study by Google Cloud in October revealed that doctors spend nearly 28 hours per week on administrative tasks like filling out paperwork, contributing significantly to burnout among healthcare professionals.

Microsoft’s venture into AI-powered medical assistance follows its $16 billion acquisition of Nuance Communications in 2021, the company behind Dragon Medical One and DAX Copilot. The technology is already in use, with DAX Copilot supporting over 3 million patient consultations in the past month across more than 600 healthcare organizations.

AI-driven tools like Dragon Copilot are expected to play a significant role in transforming healthcare by addressing staff shortages, handling increasing patient volumes, and enhancing overall care delivery.
