Mohbad: Artistes’ Exit Shouldn’t be Death Sentence – Seyi Law Tells Record Label Owners

Famous Nigerian comedian Oluwaseyitan Aletile, popularly known as Seyi Law, has called on record label owners in the country to adopt responsible and ethical practices, expressing concern over the well-being and careers of artists who choose to leave their labels.

Seyi Law alleged that some music executives resort to vindictive actions, vowing to obstruct the success of artists who depart from their record labels. He also accused certain label owners of pushing their signees into unhealthy and illicit lifestyles.

These remarks from the comic actor come in the wake of the untimely passing of former Marlian Music signee, Mohbad, who tragically died on Tuesday. This incident occurred just a year after Mohbad’s controversial departure from the record label owned by Naira Marley.

Taking to his social media platform, Seyi Law voiced his concerns, urging record label owners to exercise restraint and fairness in their dealings with artists. He emphasized that artists’ decisions to leave should not result in punitive measures or harm to their careers.

He wrote, “In life, we win some and lose some. Record label owners (in fact, senior colleagues in the entertainment business) must know when to let go. ‘I am leaving’ shouldn’t be a death sentence. Don’t make yourself the alpha and omega over anybody whose talent you were not the giver.”

Seyi Law further criticized instances where label owners seemingly held grudges against departing artists, denying them access to media platforms, shows, and other opportunities in the industry. He cautioned against individuals wielding undue influence and control over young talents’ destinies, especially those unrelated to the entertainment field.

Addressing concerns about the influence of substance use in the industry, Seyi Law mentioned that some labels force their signees into lifestyles characterized by drug and alcohol consumption. He expressed disapproval of such practices and the peer pressure that ensues.

The comedian referred to past incidents in the industry, such as the controversy involving rapper Naira Marley and musician Ruggedman, highlighting the importance of accountability and responsible behavior.

In closing, Seyi Law emphasized the need for record label owners to exercise responsibility and compassion in their roles. He urged against harming another person’s life or career for personal gain and stressed the importance of individual and collective accountability within the entertainment industry.
