My First Marriage Was My First Taste of Poverty – Iyabo Ojo

Popular Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo recently shared a candid account of her life, revealing that her first encounter with poverty occurred during her marriage to her ex-husband, Ademidun Ojo. She discussed her experiences during an interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, shedding light on her journey of matrimony and the challenges she faced.

In her interview, Iyabo Ojo recounted how her perception of poverty drastically changed when she entered into wedlock with her former spouse. She emphasized that this period of her life was quite different from her upbringing and earlier years.

She stated, “When I went to my husband’s house for the first time, I didn’t even know there were face-me-I-slap-you apartments. Most times, don’t blame the rich when they don’t understand the problems of the poor, because I never knew what poverty was all about.”

Iyabo Ojo also provided insights into her background, highlighting the contrast between her childhood and the circumstances she encountered after marriage. She spoke of her family’s relative affluence, which included access to amenities such as an industrial generator that ensured uninterrupted power supply.

Reflecting on her family’s financial stability, she shared, “In my house, we had an industrial generator. Once the light goes off in a few seconds, the light is up. My grandmother was one of the richest women in those days. I had a car to myself that took me to school and brought me back.”

However, she expressed that her experience changed significantly when she entered into her marriage. She described her initial years of marriage as an exciting adventure but acknowledged the financial challenges she faced during that period.

She added, “The only time I experienced poverty was when I married my ex-husband. Initially, it was fun. It was like an adventure. At 18, I had an account opened for me because my grandfather had done his will in such a way that money was being paid to the grandchild’s account. I had money. You can imagine that, as of 1997/1998, I had about N100,000 in my account.”

Iyabo Ojo’s revelations provide a glimpse into her personal journey, underscoring the transformative impact of marriage and its effects on her perception of wealth and poverty. Her story resonates with many who have undergone similar life-changing experiences.
