My Swedish Wife Divorced Me for Being Stuck in Nigeria During Lockdown – May D
Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has revealed details about his previously undisclosed marriage to a Swedish woman and the subsequent divorce that took place during the COVID-19 lockdown.
In a candid conversation on The Honest Bunch podcast, the “Soundtrack” hitmaker shared that he had settled in Sweden to be with his then-girlfriend, whom he later married. During his time there, May D took on the role of a “house husband,” staying home to care for their child while his wife worked.
Addressing his unconventional role, the singer explained, “I decided to settle down in Sweden after going there for a show because my girlfriend was Swedish. I stayed home to take care of our baby while she worked. What was I supposed to do? Go and work? I was comfortable because even though I wasn’t working, I earned five times her salary from my shows.”
May D expressed his contentment with the arrangement, emphasizing that his focus was on supporting his wife and child. However, the relationship took an unexpected turn during the pandemic.
The singer revealed, “We got divorced during COVID-19 because I got stuck in Nigeria. That was how she divorced me. Their perspective is different from ours.”
The revelation has sparked discussions among fans and social media users about cultural differences and the challenges posed by long-distance relationships during the pandemic. Despite the personal setback, May D continues to focus on his music career.
