Cardi B Affirms Her Nationality Amidst Misidentification Controversy

Cardi B has taken a firm stance against being mislabeled, emphasizing the importance of recognizing her true nationality.

In an Instagram Live session on Thursday (April 4), the “Up” rapper addressed the misconception surrounding her identity, particularly regarding her nationality. Cardi clarified the distinction between being Mexican and being Dominican, expressing offence at being inaccurately identified.

“I feel offended that people call me Mexican and stuff because I’m not Mexican,” she asserted, highlighting the differences in culture, language, and cuisine between the two nationalities. Drawing parallels with other cultural identities, Cardi underscored the impact of misidentification on individuals’ sense of identity and belonging.

The controversy arose following a dispute with a social media influencer, initiated by remarks made in a TikTok video by user @bdtrelilbrother, also known as Raymonte. Cardi objected to being labeled as “very, very ghetto” despite not being “visibly Black,” sparking a heated exchange on social media platforms.

Amidst the debate, Cardi emphasized the importance of accurate representation and called for respect towards her Dominican heritage. The rapper’s exchange with fellow artist Ice Spice further clarified the issue, reaffirming her Dominican identity and highlighting the significance of cultural recognition.

As the conversation unfolded, Cardi’s response resonated with her followers, emphasizing the need for cultural sensitivity and acknowledgment of individual identities.

Cardi’s unwavering stance on her nationality reflects a broader call for cultural understanding and respect within society.
