Nadal: ‘I Need to Go Back Home, There Are More Important Things Than Tennis’

Tennis star, Rafael Nadal has said that he has more important things than tennis to focus on following his elimination from the US Open.

As reported by Marca, the Spaniard was knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16 by American player Frances Tiafoe. The 24-year-old broke down in tears when he beat the 22-time Grand Slam winner 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Speaking during his press conference after the match, Nadal hinted that the defeat may not be as important to him as many may expect.

“Now I need to go back home, I have more important things than tennis,” he said.

He announced that his wife is pregnant in June but she was admitted to hospital shortly before the US Open as a precautionary measure.

He explained that he has not had the best preparation for the tournament, given his personal situation.

“Of course, this was not the ideal preparation for me, but, in other cases, it has gone the right way, even without the perfect preparation,” he said.

“We can’t find excuses. We need to be enough of a critic of myself.

“That’s the only way to improve, that’s the only way that I understand that you are able to find solutions.”

The Spaniard was also keen to heap praise on Tiafoe, who will be looking to build on what is currently the best moment of his career so far.
