Natalie Portman Used to Find Dressing for Awards Ceremonies ‘Oppressive’

Award-winning actress Natalie Portman has opened up about her changing perspective on dressing up for awards ceremonies, revealing that she once found the experience “oppressive.”

In a recent appearance on the ‘SmartLess’ podcast, the ‘Black Swan’ star shared her insights, noting that in the past, she felt that women bore the brunt of having to look impeccable while men enjoyed more comfort in their attire.

Portman, 42, candidly expressed, “I used to think it was kind of oppressive … women have to spend all this time and discomfort … [while] men get to roll out of bed and wear something they’re warm in.” However, since becoming a mother to Aleph, 12, and Amalia, six, with husband Benjamin Millepied, her perspective has shifted.

The actress admitted that she now embraces the opportunity to glam up for events, viewing it as a fun experience that boosts her confidence. “Having kids, I feel like it’s pretty fun to have people make you feel good and go glam,” she remarked.

Despite her newfound appreciation for red carpet fashion, Portman humorously acknowledged the challenge of blending into the style-conscious environment of Paris, where she currently resides. She confessed, “We moved to Paris last year and you really can’t wear sweats in Paris … You get your visa taken away.” Reflecting on the lifestyle change from Los Angeles to Paris, she remarked, “It’s a really different lifestyle.”

Portman’s candid remarks shed light on the evolving attitudes towards fashion and self-expression in the entertainment industry, highlighting the intersection of personal identity, motherhood, and societal expectations.
