Netflix Co-Founder Reed Hastings To Step Down From Board In June

Reed Hastings, the co-founder and executive chairman of Netflix, will step down from the company’s board of directors when his current term ends in June.

The announcement was made as part of Netflix’s first-quarter earnings report, marking another major transition for the longtime leader. Hastings had already stepped away from day-to-day operations in 2023, when he relinquished his role as co-CEO and moved into the position of executive chairman. Since then, leadership has been shared between Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.

Reflecting on his time at the company, Hastings said his focus had always been on creating a culture built for longevity, delivering strong member experiences, and shaping a business capable of sustained success across generations. He now plans to devote more time to philanthropy and other personal interests.

Both Sarandos and Peters paid tribute to Hastings’ legacy, describing him as central to Netflix’s identity and long-term vision.

His departure comes shortly after Netflix made headlines for pulling out of a high-profile acquisition race involving Warner Bros. Discovery. Addressing speculation, Sarandos clarified that Hastings’ decision to step down was unrelated to the deal, noting that he had actually supported the bid internally.

While it is uncommon for a founder to fully exit a company’s board after stepping back from executive duties, Sarandos described Hastings as an exception, adding that the board will begin the process of reshaping its structure in the coming months.

Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997, helping transform it from a DVD-by-mail service into a global streaming powerhouse. Under his leadership, the company disrupted traditional entertainment models, took on legacy players like Blockbuster, and pioneered original content production.

By the time he stepped down as CEO, Netflix had grown to more than 230 million subscribers. That figure has since risen to about 325 million, with the company expanding into areas such as live sports, podcasting, and ad-supported streaming.

Beyond his work in entertainment, Hastings has been deeply involved in philanthropy. Alongside his wife, Patty Quillin, he launched a $100 million fund focused on children’s education and has donated extensively to academic institutions.

His exit from the board marks the end of an era for Netflix, closing a chapter on one of the most influential founders in modern media.
