Netflix Confirms ‘Supacell’ to Return for a Second Season
Netflix has officially renewed the superhero series Supacell for a second season, following the success of its first six-episode run which premiered in June 2024. The streaming giant made the announcement on Tuesday, August 13, with a playful nod to fans, stating, “Tell your mum we said Season 2! It’s official: Supacell will return.”
Directed by Andrew Onwubolu, better known as Rapman, Supacell centres on a group of five Black South Londoners who suddenly develop mysterious powers, all while being linked by a shared family history of sickle cell disease. The show follows their journey as one man attempts to unite them to save the woman he loves.
The series was a major hit on Netflix, dominating the platform’s Top 10 English language TV charts for six consecutive weeks after its release. In its first week, Supacell garnered 11.8 million views, followed by 7.1 million views in the second week.
Rapman, who also serves as the showrunner, revealed in a statement to Tudum that he had always envisioned multiple seasons for Supacell. “I’ve always had it [mapped out] to Season 3. I know how Season 2 ends. I’ve got stuff planned for this story. I’ve had this in my head for years, so I’m ready to go,” he said.
The series has received widespread acclaim for its performances, direction, writing, and cinematography, as well as for raising awareness about sickle cell disease. Supacell also delves into important social issues such as knife crime, racial profiling, poverty, and the exploitation of Black bodies.
Alongside Rapman, the series is co-directed by Sebastian Theil and co-executive produced by Steve Searle, Mouktar Mohammed, and Anna Ferguson. The ensemble cast features Tosin Cole, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Adelayo Adedayo, Eddie Marsan, Ky-mani Carty, and Rayxia Ojo.
As fans eagerly await the continuation of the Supacell saga, the show’s return promises to bring more of the intense drama and thought-provoking storytelling that made its first season a standout.
