Actors Set to Strike After Talks With Major Studios and Streaming Services Fail

Talks between a union representing Hollywood actors and major studios and streaming services have failed, leading to an upcoming strike—the first in over 40 years.

The union, SAG-AFTRA, stated that the studio management’s offers were deemed insulting and disrespectful, prompting the recommendation of a strike.

The union’s governing board is set to vote on the strike recommendation, with an announcement scheduled for Thursday.

SAG-AFTRA members had previously voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike.
The strike would coincide with the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America, creating concerns about extended shutdowns in the industry.

The strike is expected to halt most productions, with the exception of independent films.
The last time actors and writers simultaneously went on strike was in 1960.

The industry has undergone significant changes since the previous actors’ strike, with streaming services and artificial intelligence presenting new challenges in contract negotiations.

The strike comes at a time when major media and tech companies are focusing on cost-cutting and profitability.

The studios, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, had earlier proposed an AI proposal to protect actors’ digital likenesses.

The strike issues include increased pay and residuals, particularly regarding streaming services and the use of AI.

High-profile performers have urged the union to take a hard line and prepared to strike if necessary.

The strikes are seen as a pivotal moment in the industry’s evolution, with the potential for long-term consequences if not resolved appropriately.
