Nigerian Singer Simi Supports Kenya’s Anti-Tax Protests
Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, widely known as Simi, has expressed solidarity with the ongoing anti-tax hike protests in Kenya.
Kenyan youths have been actively protesting against the proposed tax increases in widespread demonstrations under the banner ‘RejectFinanceBill2024.’ These protests have escalated, with Amnesty Kenya reporting that five people were shot dead and dozens injured during clashes between police and protesters who stormed the parliament building in Nairobi on Tuesday.
Simi took to her X handle on Tuesday night to voice her support for the demonstrators, acknowledging the profound struggle they face. “I stand with the people of Kenya,” she wrote. “It is both powerful and heartbreaking for a people to have to fight and die for freedoms and rights. Godspeed and strength. #RejectFinanceBill2024.”
In a series of additional posts, Simi further commented on the situation, stating: “Wow. When you’ve had enough, the fight is almost inevitable. African leaders – haven’t you done enough? I can’t wait for the day Africa is not a weapon fashioned against Africans. All of this amazing Black power and human resource, but the majority are not likely to thrive unless they run.”
Simi’s statements resonate with the widespread frustration and call for change, highlighting the broader issues of governance and economic policies affecting many African nations.
