Nokia Secures 5G Patent License Agreement with Honor in Fourth Smartphone Deal in 12 Months

Nokia has inked a new patent cross-license agreement with Honor, encompassing essential inventions in 5G and various cellular technologies for both parties. This marks the fourth significant smartphone agreement within the past 12 months for the Finnish telecommunications giant.

Susanna Martikainen, Chief Licensing Officer for Mobile Devices at Nokia, expressed delight over the amicable resolution, stating, “We are delighted to have concluded an amicable patent cross-license agreement with Honor, one of the leading players in the Chinese smartphone market.” Martikainen highlighted that this agreement underscores Nokia’s robust patent portfolio and its extensive contributions to cellular standards and related technologies over the decades.

Nokia, having invested €140 billion in research and development since 2000, boasts a patent portfolio comprising around 20,000 patent families, including 6,000 deemed essential to 5G.

Wenyu Zhou, Head of Global Intellectual Property at Honor, emphasized the company’s commitment to respecting intellectual property (IP) rights. Zhou noted, “As both 5G SEP holder and implementor, Honor highly respects IP rights and strongly believes that the reasonable value of IP is important to the development of the mobile industry.” The conclusion of this patent cross-license agreement, Zhou added, signifies Honor’s dedication to innovation for creating a smart life across diverse scenarios and channels.

The agreement reflects the evolving landscape of patent collaborations and licensing in the tech industry, underlining the importance of intellectual property in fostering innovation and advancing mobile technologies.
