Paul Okoye Raises Alarm Over Harmful Social Media Trends Among Nigerian Youths

Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, has voiced serious concerns about the growing misuse of social media by young people in the country, warning that the consequences could be devastating.

The music star, known for his hit track Reason With Me, shared his thoughts via Instagram Stories, where he cautioned against the pursuit of clout and online trends at the expense of personal integrity and future consequences.

“Social media is going to destroy a lot of people,” he wrote. “You might think it’s just cruise, clout, or to trend… Your eye go clear.”

Okoye’s remarks reflect rising anxieties about the role of digital platforms in shaping youth culture, often encouraging risky behaviour and online controversy in exchange for fleeting popularity.

Nigeria’s social media landscape remains largely unregulated, and while the platforms offer users opportunities for expression and connection, they have also become breeding grounds for cyberbullying, misinformation, and online harassment.

Efforts to introduce formal regulation have faced stiff resistance. A proposed social media regulation bill introduced in the National Assembly sparked widespread backlash, with critics accusing lawmakers of attempting to stifle free speech. The bill has since struggled to gain momentum amid public criticism.

Okoye’s warning adds to a growing chorus of voices calling for more responsible use of social media, especially among impressionable youth seeking fame or influence online.
