Pheelz Weighs In on Disassociating from Afrobeat Genre Trend

Nigerian producer-turned-artist, Pheelz, has shared his perspective on the growing trend of Nigerian celebrities distancing themselves from the Afrobeat genre, even as it garners global recognition and evolves.

In a recent interview on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Adesope, Pheelz addressed the ongoing discourse sparked by artists clarifying their musical genres, including Wizkid’s statement of not wanting to be solely labelled as Afrobeat.

Pheelz emphasized that it’s an artist’s prerogative to choose whether to associate or disassociate with a particular genre, stressing that it’s not an imposed ideology. Despite the diversity of viewpoints, Pheelz affirmed his commitment to proudly represent Afrobeat, considering it as a tag for the unique style of music originating from Africa.

He highlighted the significance of Afrobeat in identifying the cultural roots of Nigerian and African music, acknowledging it as a collective decision within the culture.
