Police Refuse Bail for Speed Darlington in Burna Boy-Related Case, Lawyer Claims
Nigerian activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has disclosed that attempts to secure bail for singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, have been unsuccessful.
Speed Darlington was rearrested on Tuesday during a show in Owerri, Imo State, for alleged cyberstalking of fellow musician Damini Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy. The police reportedly transferred him to Abuja later that evening.
Providing an update via his official Facebook page on Wednesday, Adeyanju criticised the police for denying his client bail.
“The Nigerian police brought our client Speed Darlington to Abuja from Owerri this evening, and I just met him. They have refused to release him on bail over defamation of Burna Boy,” Adeyanju wrote.
The lawyer also called out Burna Boy, referencing the musician’s association with social justice themes, including his comparison to Fela Kuti, while accusing him of using the police against Speed Darlington.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with some questioning the role of law enforcement in matters involving prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Neither Burna Boy nor his representatives have issued a statement on the matter at this time.
