Protesters Attempt to Breach Tesla’s German Factory Amid Expansion Dispute
In a show of dissent against Tesla’s expansion plans, approximately 800 activists converged outside Tesla’s factory near Berlin, attempting to disrupt operations and voice opposition to the company’s growth strategy. Organized by Disrupt, a coalition of anti-capitalist groups, the protesters aimed to halt the planned expansion, citing concerns over environmental impact and resource strain.
According to police reports, a group from the protest march attempted to breach the Tesla premises, prompting a temporary halt in rail traffic between Erkner and Fürstenwalde. Despite efforts by law enforcement to prevent entry into the factory, clashes ensued as activists clashed with police officers.
Ole Becker, a spokesperson for Disrupt, highlighted instances of alleged police violence during the protests, expressing dismay over injuries sustained by demonstrators.
While neither Tesla nor local authorities in Brandenburg have issued official statements in response to the protests, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to social media platform X to reassure stakeholders that the protesters failed to breach the factory’s perimeter, emphasizing the intact security measures in place.
Disrupt argues that Tesla’s expansion plans would necessitate the clearing of surrounding forest areas and exacerbate strain on local water resources, sparking concerns over environmental degradation.
Anticipating disruptions, Tesla preemptively closed the factory to all employees on the day of the protests, aligning with a previous announcement of a production line stoppage made in January. This decision was made to ensure the safety of employees amidst the anticipated demonstrations.
The recent protest marks a continuation of tensions between Tesla and activist groups, following an arson attack on a high-voltage electricity pylon supplying power to the factory in March. Law enforcement in Brandenburg has intensified preparations for potential disturbances, emphasizing readiness to address both peaceful and non-peaceful outcomes.
