R. Kelly Claims to Have Written 25 Albums in Prison, Vows to Keep Fighting for Freedom
Despite serving a decades-long prison sentence, R. Kelly says he has continued to make music behind bars, claiming to have written 25 albums while in federal custody.
Speaking on the podcast Inmate Tea with A&P, the disgraced R&B singer described his unwavering commitment to songwriting, referring to his passion for music as an “incurable disease.”
“I’m always singing, I’m always writing,” Kelly said. “I’ve written like 25 albums since I’ve been in here.”
Beyond music, the 57-year-old insisted his legal battle is far from over.
“I’m working on getting out,” he stated. “I’m using patience as a tactic.”
His attorney, Jean Bonjean, echoed his optimism, telling TMZ: “Our appeals process has not come to an end. We will continue to fight for justice and for his freedom.”
Kelly’s Conviction and Ongoing Legal Challenges
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering in New York in 2021. His projected release date, according to Bureau of Prisons records, is December 21, 2045.
Last month, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld his conviction, rejecting his appeal. The court ruled that the singer “exploited his fame to lure girls and young women into his grasp” for over 25 years.
“Evidence at trial showed that he would isolate them from friends and family, control nearly every aspect of their lives, and abuse them verbally, physically, and sexually,” the three-judge panel stated.
Kelly’s legal team had argued that biased jurors, improperly applied laws, and insufficient trial evidence warranted a dismissal of the charges. However, the appeals court unanimously rejected these claims.
Bonjean criticized the decision as “unprecedented” and signaled plans to escalate the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Kelly previously attempted to overturn a separate conviction in Chicago related to child sex charges, but the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
