Rapper Illbliss Urges Up-and-Coming Artists to Pursue Side Hustles and Learn Practical Skills
Veteran Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has advised aspiring musicians to broaden their financial options beyond the music industry.
In a post shared via his official X handle, the hip-hop artist encouraged upcoming talents to learn valuable skills or take on side jobs as a cushion against the unpredictable nature of the music business.
“Dear Upcoming… Little advice from Illbliss. Learn a skill or find a second and third hustle that will help you keep the lights on!” he wrote.
His comment came in response to a viral video clip from a recent interview with music executive Ayo Animashaun, who highlighted the harsh realities many Nigerian artists face. Animashaun noted that, contrary to public perception, only a small fraction of artists are earning significant income from music.
“A lot of artists are not making money. You say artists are making money — you can’t count ten,” Animashaun said in the clip.
Illbliss, who has long advocated for financial literacy and strategic planning in the entertainment industry, echoed the sentiment, pointing out that passion alone isn’t enough to sustain a career in music.
His message serves as a timely reminder for emerging artists to build sustainable foundations beyond fame, especially in an industry known for its highs and lows.
