Real Madrid Manager Carlo Ancelotti Faces Potential Jail Time for Tax Evasion
Carlo Ancelotti, the current manager of Real Madrid, is facing potential legal troubles that could result in a five-year prison sentence for alleged tax evasion during his earlier tenure with the club.
Spanish state prosecutors have levelled accusations against the Italian coach, claiming that he utilized shell companies to conceal portions of his income during his stint with the Galacticos from 2014 to 2015. Ancelotti stands accused of two counts of tax fraud, which, if proven, could lead to a jail term exceeding four years.
The allegations suggest that Ancelotti declared the income received directly from Real Madrid but failed to disclose earnings from image rights, resulting in an alleged defrauding of €1 million over two years.
Ancelotti’s case is not unique in the realm of sports. Previously, football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo faced similar accusations during their tenures at Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively. Messi was found guilty of defrauding Spain between 2007 and 2009, ultimately paying a substantial fine to replace a prison sentence. Similarly, Ronaldo settled his tax evasion charges with a €18.8 million fine and a 23-month prison sentence, which was not served.
