Seun Kuti Criticizes Nigerian Government for Lack of Sports Investment at 2024 Olympics
Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has publicly criticized the Nigerian government for its lack of investment in sports, following the country’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Kuti expressed his frustration, highlighting how Nigeria only competed in events that required minimal financial investment. He pointed out that while Nigerians excelled in sports like track and field, which need little to no equipment, the country was absent in more resource-intensive sports.
“I watched the Olympic games and saw how poorly we performed,” Kuti said. “We only participated in sports that don’t need much investment. For football, all you need is a ball and a makeshift goalpost. But when it comes to sports that require facilities like rackets, basketball courts, and other equipment, we weren’t there.”
Kuti lamented the missed opportunities to nurture local talent, noting that many Nigerians excel in sports abroad due to better training and facilities. “I saw people with Nigerian names achieving great things for other countries. Imagine the potential we’re wasting because we don’t invest in our own children’s talents.”
He called for the creation of a robust sports league in Nigeria, suggesting that significant investments could help develop local talent and give young athletes a chance to shine on the world stage. “Why not create a good league and offer substantial rewards? Our boys in Europe earn millions; why can’t we do the same here?” Kuti asked.
His comments have sparked discussions on social media about the need for greater investment in Nigerian sports and the untapped potential of the country’s athletes.
