Snoop Dogg Shocks Fans Choosing East Coast Over West Coast in Hip Hop Debate

Snoop Dogg recently appeared with Stephen A. Smith where the topic of discussion turned to rap. During the interview, Snoop surprised fans by giving the East Coast the nod over his native West Coast in terms of who has had a bigger impact on hip hop. When asked which coast had the biggest impact on hip hop, Snoop said: “Definitely East Coast because East Coast started Hip Hop… It’s the East Coast because that’s the epicenter, that’s the foundation, that’s where it began.”

Snoop added that a lot of the rappers from the West Coast imitated those they saw thriving on the East Coast, “All of the rappers that started in New York in the beginning was our foundation… They set the foundation.”

While some fans respected Snoop’s opinion, others felt he should have an allegiance to the coast that raised him. One fan commented: “Crazy Snoop would say this. PAC would be appalled,” while another wrote: “He’s right but idk how long that will be true. NY hasn’t been the Mecca of hiphop in over a decade. And a lot of their gangbanging comes from the west coast.”

In 2020, Snoop made a list of his top 10 rappers of all time, with New York native Slick Rick at the top.

Speaking About His Other Ventures

During the interview, Snoop also shared that he recently joined an ownership group led by Hollywood film producer Neko Sparks to purchase the NHL’s Ottawa Senators. He spoke about his plans to create the Snoop Youth Hockey League outside of Canada to introduce kids in urban communities to the sport. “And the plan that we have is to go and build a Snoop Youth Hockey League outside of Canada so kids in urban communities can learn about hockey [and] can play the sport,” he said.
