Sony is Shutting Down PixelOpus, the Studio Behind ‘Concrete Genie’
PlayStation Studios has announced the closure of PixelOpus, a small in-house studio, on June 2.
A PlayStation representative confirmed that the studio’s closure was part of a recent review process to ensure they meet the organization’s short and long-term strategic objectives.
PixelOpus, which developed Concrete Genie and Entwined, was reportedly working on a new PS5 game with Sony Pictures Animation.
The Santa Mateo-based studio was founded in 2014 in response to the success of indie studio thatgamecompany’s Journey on the PS3.
PixelOpus’ games strived for originality with Entwined being a dual-stick rhythm game with a distinct art style, while Concrete Genie tells the story of standing up to bullying using street art.
The closure of experimental studios with innovative ideas, such as PixelOpus, is often a result of mega-corporation parent companies cutting costs. Despite the studio’s closure, Concrete Genie is still available on the PlayStation Store for $30.
