Star Wars Outlaws Developer Addresses Early Glitches, Cites Game’s Ambition as a Factor

As anticipation builds for the release of Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world game set in the iconic galaxy, early access players have encountered some issues, including glitches affecting game progression and saving. Ubisoft, the studio behind the game, has acknowledged these problems and is advising players on potential fixes.

Julian Gerighty, the creative director at Massive Entertainment, the studio responsible for the game, expressed frustration over the initial technical hiccups. “When you have millions of players step into your world, you’d rather it not happen,” Gerighty told BBC Newsbeat. However, he emphasized that the complexity and ambition of Outlaws contribute to these early challenges. “The bigger the game is, the more systems you have, the more complex it’s going to be,” he explained.

Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws follows the story of Kay Vess, a “scoundrel” navigating the galaxy’s crime syndicates in search of freedom. The game has received mixed reviews, with IGN praising its exploration but noting issues with stealth, combat, and bugs at launch. Eurogamer and PC Gamer echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the game’s technical flaws amid its ambitious scope.

Despite the critiques, Gerighty remains optimistic, noting the advances in technology that have allowed for a more immersive experience compared to previous games. He also acknowledged the importance of community feedback, stating that it plays a crucial role in improving the game. “The community is such a vocal part of making things better and improving the game,” he said, adding that the development team plans to address issues in future updates and downloadable content (DLC).

Gerighty also credited LucasFilm Games for guiding Outlaws within the broader Star Wars universe, ensuring the game fits seamlessly into the franchise’s extensive lore. Reflecting on the launch, he described the process as both thrilling and terrifying, with a commitment to continually enhancing the player experience through future updates.
