Stellantis to Lay Off Up to 2,450 Workers as Ram 1500 Classic Production Winds Down

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced plans to lay off as many as 2,450 workers at its Warren Truck assembly plant near Detroit, as the automaker phases out production of the Ram 1500 Classic truck.

The layoffs, set to begin as early as October 8, come as the plant transitions from two shifts to a single shift in its general assembly operations. Despite the changes, the facility will continue to produce the Jeep Wagoneer on two shifts.

As the Ram 1500 Classic nears the end of its production run, Stellantis will shift its focus to the Ram 1500 Tradesman, manufactured at the Sterling Heights Assembly plant. The 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman will feature upgraded electrical architecture and new technologies aimed at enhancing safety and tracking for commercial fleets.

The layoffs will impact around 3,700 workers represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. Stellantis has confirmed that those affected will receive 52 weeks of supplemental unemployment benefits, an additional 52 weeks of transition assistance, and two years of healthcare coverage.

This announcement follows a series of cost-cutting measures initiated by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, including voluntary buyouts offered to U.S. salaried workers. The UAW and Stellantis had previously reached a new labor agreement last fall after a historic six-week strike.

During the company’s Investor Day in June, Tavares highlighted weaknesses in some U.S. plants, although he did not specify which ones.
