Super Falcons Star Ashleigh Plumptre Joins Al Ittihad Project, Boosting Saudi Women’s League

In a significant move that highlights the growing appeal of women’s football worldwide, Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has officially become a part of the Al Ittihad project, joining renowned football stars such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Fabinho. The announcement of her arrival was made by the club through a tweet on Wednesday morning, marking a pivotal moment in her career.

Plumptre captured the hearts of football fans with her stellar performances for the Super Falcons of Nigeria during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Her contributions on the field helped propel the national team to the round of 16, where they faced England and ultimately suffered a heart-wrenching exit on penalties.

The England-born defender showcased her exceptional skills while operating as a left-back, earning recognition as one of the tournament’s standout players. Her outstanding displays have now led her to the Saudi Arabian Women’s League, aligning with the country’s commitment to advancing women’s football alongside the thriving men’s league.

Plumptre’s journey to Saudi Arabia began after she departed from England’s Leicester City at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, prior to the World Cup. Speculation initially linked her with a move to Manchester United, but her career took an unexpected turn with her transfer to Saudi Arabia.

Al Ittihad Ladies proudly announced Plumptre’s signing with a heartfelt video tribute, extending a warm welcome to the Nigerian defender as she embarks on her new adventure with the esteemed club. Plumptre confirmed the authenticity of her move in response to the post on her social media profile, expressing her excitement about joining Al-Ittihad.

In her own words, she posted, “Grateful to have signed for Al-Ittihad. Excited to start this journey alongside some incredible human beings. My journey of stepping into more of myself continues… It’s more than football.”

Plumptre’s choice to join the Saudi Arabian Women’s League came as a surprise to many, given its relatively lower profile compared to the men’s league. However, her move could potentially redefine the future of the competition, establishing her as one of its marquee stars.

Notably, Plumptre is not alone in her venture to Saudi Arabia. She is joined by Morocco’s Salma Amani, another standout performer at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Amani, who represented the Atlas Lionesses in three matches during the tournament, made the transition to Al Ittihad Ladies from Metz in France, further enhancing the league’s international appeal.
