‘They’re Threatening to Cancel My Show Over Economy Comment’ – Davido
Afrobeats star Davido has claimed that his December concert in Lagos is under threat of cancellation following his comments about Nigeria’s economy on the American podcast Big Homies House. During the interview, the singer warned US citizens against relocating to Africa, particularly Nigeria, citing the country’s economy as being in “shambles.”
The remarks have sparked backlash, with prominent figures like Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri criticising him for painting the nation in a negative light. Responding to the criticism, Davido took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend himself, asserting that entertainers are the true representatives of the country’s image abroad. “Y’all mad ’cause we the real ambassadors!” he posted.
The singer further alleged that he has received threats targeting his upcoming Lagos concert. “Dem say dem go cancel my show ’cause of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” he wrote.
While Davido’s candid remarks have drawn support from some fans, others argue that such statements could harm Nigeria’s reputation internationally. The Lagos concert is part of the artist’s highly anticipated December events, and it remains uncertain whether the controversy will impact its execution.
