TikTok Is Testing an AI Chatbot Named Tako

TikTok has joined the trend of incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) by testing a chatbot named Tako.

According to Bloomberg, Tako is designed to answer questions and engage in conversations with TikTok users. A spokesperson for the app confirmed that they are exploring new ways to enhance search and discovery on TikTok in select markets.

The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to creating a safe and valuable community that entertains, fosters creativity, and drives culture.

TikTok is following in the footsteps of tech peers like Snap Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Google, who have also ventured into developing chatbots and other generative AI tools.

Currently, the Tako test is limited to a small number of employees, as reported by Daniel Buchuk, an analyst at Watchful, a company that tracks app development testing for competitors.

The move towards AI comes at a contentious time for TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd. Policymakers in the US and Europe have expressed concerns about data security and potential misuse by the Chinese government.

In fact, Montana recently became the first US state to pass legislation banning TikTok, which is now facing legal challenges.

In its current form, Tako appears as a small ghost-like icon on the top right of the TikTok screen. Upon tapping the icon, users are taken to an instant messenger interface where they can ask questions. Buchuk noted that Tako can also provide content recommendations based on users’ interests and preferences.

The privacy terms of the feature state that despite having an in-house AI team, user data provided to Tako is collected and shared with undisclosed “third-party service providers” to provide answers. Tako is only available to TikTok users who are 18 years or older.

Although users can delete their data, they are cautioned not to disclose personal information to the chatbot. Furthermore, the feature advises against relying solely on Tako for medical, legal, or financial advice, as the feedback generated by the AI may not always be accurate.

Overall, Tako is expected to enable TikTok to gather more precise data for delivering personalized and targeted content to individual users. Buchuk believes it has the potential to revolutionize the way people utilize TikTok.
