Tinubu Promises to Support Google’s Plan to Create One Million Digital Jobs in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has expressed the Federal Government’s readiness to collaborate with global tech giant Google Incorporated in its endeavour to generate one million digital jobs in Nigeria. The president made this assurance during a visit from Google Global Vice President, Richard Gingras, at the State House on Friday.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s pool of creative and talented young individuals, especially in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Tinubu emphasized that Google possesses the necessary capabilities and tools to empower these young minds and enable them to excel. He welcomed Google’s willingness to partner with Nigeria, recognizing the significance of digital innovation and its role in promoting the digital economy and empowering the country’s youth.

“We are ready to work with you on your commitment to create one million digital jobs in Nigeria. We will give you all the support you need to have a beneficial corporate responsibility. We have started our economic reforms, even though tortuous,” President Tinubu stated.

In discussing Google’s support for free speech, freedom of the press, and democracy through its platforms, Tinubu reaffirmed the importance of defending free press and speech, asserting the government’s commitment to supporting a free society.

Richard Gingras, the Google Vice President, shared his motivation for being in Nigeria, attending the West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference. He expressed admiration for the creativity and talent demonstrated by young Nigerians, who are embracing technology and digital tools to expand access to information and promote democracy.

Gingras informed President Tinubu that Google is deeply interested in Nigeria and is prepared to support the federal government. He highlighted Google’s capabilities in areas such as Artificial Intelligence and other digital innovations, which empower young people to become digital entrepreneurs.

The Google Vice President also mentioned the Equiano subsea cable, named after Nigerian slave abolitionists, which landed in Nigeria in April 2022. This cable is expected to significantly impact future internet connectivity demands in the country.

Furthermore, Gingras assured that Google is committed to assisting in securing Nigeria amid the challenges posed by disinformation and fake news. The organization seeks to continue its partnership with the Nigerian government in this endeavour.

“Google has a deep interest in Nigeria. We want to support the government’s efforts to create one million digital jobs. We have all the tools and capabilities to make this happen. We will also help to secure Nigeria, and we have discussed that with your National Security Adviser. We will continue to support your programs to expand your digital economy,” Gingras said.

Accompanying Richard Gingras on the visit were Adewolu Adene, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Google in West Africa, and Dapo Olorunyomi, Publisher of Premium Times. The meeting highlighted the potential for fruitful collaboration between Google and Nigeria in advancing the digital landscape and empowering the country’s young talent.
