Toyota Industries Faces Crackdown for Engine Emissions Cheating – Nikkei

Japan’s transport ministry is gearing up to take action against Toyota Industries, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp, for allegedly cheating on engine emissions tests, as reported by Nikkei on Monday.

According to sources familiar with the matter cited by the newspaper, the ministry is considering various measures, including the possibility of withdrawing certification for certain engine types, in response to the misconduct.

Toyota Industries, known as the world’s largest manufacturer of forklift trucks, could face orders from the ministry to implement measures aimed at preventing a recurrence of such misconduct.

Although Toyota Motor Corp has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comments on the matter, Nikkei’s report suggests that Toyota Industries may lose certification for an excavator engine, with potential action also looming over two forklift engine models.

The severity of the misconduct will be a determining factor in the ministry’s decision-making process, which may extend to engines used in popular vehicles such as Land Cruiser SUVs and HiAce vans, the report noted.

In January, the company disclosed to the ministry that it had uncovered instances of misconduct, including the manipulation of performance test data for multiple forklift and automobile engine models, according to Nikkei’s report.
