Joe Budden Speculates on ‘Def Jam Vendetta’ Reboot Delay, Citing Money Issues

During an episode of the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast hosted by Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero, rapper Joe Budden shared his theory on why the beloved video game Def Jam Vendetta has yet to receive a reboot.

Budden, who appeared in the original game alongside other rappers, speculated that financial concerns might be hindering efforts to revive the classic title.

Expressing his thoughts on the matter, Budden suggested, “I’m not involved in those talks but I imagine that would be the hold up. Gaming is big. If the business is right, we should definitely do that. Music should have more of a presence in the video game world outside of people just going round your house for a 2K party or whatever.”

He emphasized the importance of getting the business aspect right, indicating a willingness to engage in discussions if the terms are favourable. However, he expressed frustration with the notion of certain entities monopolizing the gaming space.

Echoing similar sentiments, fellow rapper Ice-T, who also featured in Def Jam Vendetta and its sequel, Def Jam: Fight For NY, took to social media to address the issue. On X (formerly Twitter), Ice-T hinted that licensing costs for music and voice rights could be a barrier to a potential reboot.

Responding to fan inquiries about the game’s absence, Ice-T highlighted the lack of substantial compensation for artists involved in the original release. Despite the game’s popularity, many artists allegedly received minimal financial compensation or none at all.

Def Jam Vendetta, known for its roster of rap icons and immersive gameplay, has garnered a cult following since its initial release in 2003. While fans have clamored for a reboot, including a teased announcement from Def Jam in 2020, the resurgence of the series remains uncertain amidst lingering financial concerns.

The absence of a Def Jam Vendetta reboot underscores broader challenges in bridging the worlds of music and gaming, despite the success of other hip-hop-themed titles like GTA and Gears of War featuring Ice-T.
