Trademark Clash: Take-Two Interactive Challenges Remedy Entertainment Over “R” Logo Resemblance

The gaming industry is witnessing a trademark dispute unfold as Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, clashes with Remedy Entertainment, the developer renowned for the Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises, over allegations that Remedy’s new “R” logo bears a striking resemblance to that of Rockstar Games.

According to reports from RespawnFirst, Take-Two Interactive has raised objections to Remedy’s trademark filings submitted to the Intellectual Property Offices in the UK and EU. The objection claims that Remedy’s new logo could potentially cause “confusion on the part of the public.” Remedy introduced its updated “R” logo on April 14th, 2023, in a blog post, stating that the modification was made to better represent its diverse gaming portfolio beyond the Max Payne era.

Remedy filed trademark applications with the UK and EU in 2023, with subsequent applications made in the US. Take-Two responded by opposing Remedy’s EU application on July 26th and the UK application on September 12th. The objection from Take-Two suggests that the primary concern lies in the prominent use of the letter “R” in both logos.

As the dispute unfolds, both parties have requested an extension to the customary two-month “cooling off period” before potential legal proceedings. If a resolution isn’t reached, adversarial proceedings are scheduled to commence no earlier than September 7th, 2025. However, considering the historical collaboration between Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games, dating back to the sale of Max Payne rights in 2004, a settlement remains a plausible outcome.

Despite the possibility of an amicable resolution, Take-Two has until November 6th, 2025, to submit additional evidence supporting its objections if it chooses to proceed with the dispute. Take-Two Interactive has a track record of engaging in trademark disputes, exemplified by its involvement in compelling Hazelight Studio to relinquish name ownership rights for “It Takes Two” in 2021.
