Tragedy Strikes at Lagos Hospital as Doctor Dies in Elevator Crash
In a heartbreaking incident at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, medical doctor Dr Vwaere Diaso lost her life after an elevator she was inside crashed. The devastating event occurred on Tuesday, leaving the hospital staff and community in shock.
According to our correspondent’s findings, the elevator malfunctioned, causing it to plummet from the 10th floor to the ground floor, leading to the tragic loss of Dr. Diaso’s life. She was immediately rushed to the emergency ward for treatment, but sadly, her injuries proved fatal.
A colleague of Dr. Diaso, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared distressing details about the elevator’s recurring issues. He revealed that the elevator had previously malfunctioned on several occasions, prompting concern among the staff. Despite repeated reports of the elevator’s poor condition, no maintenance action had been taken.
The colleague also pointed out that the hospital management was aware of the elevator’s state but failed to address the matter appropriately. The elevator, designed to carry a maximum of 630kg or eight people, had become increasingly unreliable, prompting the staff to reduce the number of occupants to avoid congestion.
“As we entered the elevator, it would sometimes stop abruptly, leaving us stranded inside,” the colleague shared. “We kept reporting the issues, but no action was taken to fix it.”
The hospital staff, alarmed by the recurrent problems, had taken precautions by limiting the number of people allowed inside the malfunctioning elevator. The colleague mentioned that they would wait for the next batch to ensure safety.
“We knew it was faulty, and they were aware of it too. This is unacceptable; we cannot let this slide,” the colleague expressed firmly.
Dr. Vwaere Diaso, who was close to completing her housemanship at the hospital, had only two weeks left before the tragic incident. Her colleagues described her as a dedicated and hardworking house officer.
“She was diligent and committed to her duties,” the colleague remarked, highlighting the promising career that was abruptly cut short.
