Tyla Responds to Debut Album’s Move to ‘Pop’ Grammys Category

South African artist Tyla’s self-titled debut album has been shifted from the R&B to the Pop category for the upcoming Grammy Awards, according to reports from the Hollywood Reporter. Initially submitted in the Best R&B Album category, the project was reassigned by the Recording Academy’s R&B screening committee to the Best Pop Vocal Album category.

If nominated, Tyla would make history as the first African artist to compete in the Pop category at the prestigious awards. Her album will face stiff competition from global pop heavyweights, including Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet.

Tyla reacted to the news with excitement on social media, writing on X, “I make it all,” expressing her versatility as an artist.

Earlier this year, Tyla made waves when she became the inaugural winner of the Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her chart-topping hit “Water.” This latest recognition further cements her rising global profile.
