Veteran Actor Alapini Expresses Regret Over Supporting Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential Campaign
Veteran Nollywood actor Ganiu Nofiu, popularly known as Alapini, has expressed deep regret over his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking in a recent interview on African A-List, Alapini cited worsening economic hardship and insecurity across the country as key reasons for his disappointment. The actor revealed that he and more than 100 of his colleagues actively campaigned for Tinubu, pausing their careers for two months in a bid to help secure his victory.
“We believed in him genuinely,” Alapini said. “We thought our Messiah had come. We supported Tinubu because of the positive impact he had in Lagos and his contributions to the Yoruba film industry.”
However, two years into the administration, Alapini said neither he nor his fellow entertainers have received recognition or appreciation for their efforts.
He also criticised what he described as regional bias in the philanthropic gestures of the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu. According to him, Seyi has made notable efforts to assist people in northern Nigeria but appears to have overlooked the southwest, including the same Yoruba creatives who supported his father’s campaign.
“Is Seyi Tinubu saying he didn’t see all the veteran actors who walked under the sun campaigning? Now he’s going around northern Nigeria paying hospital bills. Are there no sick people in the southwest too?” he questioned.
Alapini’s remarks come at a time when public criticism of the government is mounting, with Nigerians grappling with high inflation, food insecurity, and rising costs of living.
