Video Game Industry Faces Potential 10% Decline in Consumer Spending

The video game industry is bracing for a challenging year ahead, with consumer spending forecasted to decline by up to 10% compared to the previous year. Despite the unexpected success of titles like Helldivers 2 and Palworld, industry analysts foresee a downturn in spending, attributed to a lack of major releases and ongoing uncertainties in the market.

Mat Piscatella, a respected analyst at Circana, formerly NPD, paints a cautious picture for the gaming industry in 2024. Projections range from a modest 2% decline to a more pessimistic 10% downturn in consumer spending. Piscatella cites uncertainty surrounding hardware releases and a scarcity of compelling content as key factors contributing to the subdued outlook.

The absence of highly anticipated titles and hardware launches slated for next year leaves the industry in a state of flux. With flagship releases like Grand Theft Auto 6 and the rumoured Switch 2 on the horizon, 2024 lacks the blockbuster releases necessary to drive significant growth. Piscatella notes the dominance of titles like Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, emphasizing the challenge of replicating its success in the current market landscape.

Speculation regarding potential “Pro” versions of consoles offers little reprieve. While there is speculation surrounding console revisions from Sony and Microsoft, their impact on market dynamics remains uncertain. Piscatella suggests that midlife upgrades typically cater to a niche market segment and are unlikely to stimulate substantial industry-wide growth.

External factors such as inflation further dampen prospects for gaming-related sales. With consumer discretionary income under pressure, gaming purchases may take a back seat in household budgets. Physical retail channels are particularly vulnerable, with brick-and-mortar stores facing stiff competition from digital sales platforms. Without the anticipated launch of a Switch 2, retailers relying heavily on physical sales may experience a significant decline in revenue.

Amidst these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of gift card sales. Retailers can expect continued growth in gift card purchases, offering consumers a convenient option to access digital content and subscriptions. Despite the looming uncertainty, gift card sales present a bright spot amidst an otherwise challenging landscape for the gaming industry.
