DDG Says Nigeria Is Safer Than the United States, Dismisses Western Media Narratives
American rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has pushed back against what he described as misleading portrayals of Nigeria in Western media, saying the country is not as dangerous as often claimed.
The Hip-Hop artist, who is currently on holiday in Lagos, shared his views in a video message circulating online, where he encouraged foreigners to visit Nigeria and experience the country firsthand.
DDG argued that security concerns in Nigeria are frequently exaggerated, adding that the United States faces more severe issues with gun violence and gang-related crime.
“I honestly think America is the most dangerous country,” he said. “Nigeria is nowhere near as dangerous as America. There’s insecurity here, no doubt, but gun violence and gangsterism are far more common in the US.”
He urged potential visitors not to be deterred by negative narratives, telling them to “pull up” and see the country for themselves.
The rapper also addressed misconceptions he had heard about Nigeria before his visit, including warnings about food safety and drinking water. According to DDG, he was advised to boil water before drinking and told that Nigerian food was unhealthy.
However, he said his experience contradicted those claims, describing Nigerian meals as healthy and singling out jollof rice as a favourite.
DDG’s comments have sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians welcoming his remarks and praising him for challenging long-standing stereotypes about the country.
