Seun Kuti Affirms: “Lagos Belongs to Foreigners, Not Ethnic Groups”

Grammy-nominated afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has made a bold statement, declaring that “Lagos is white man’s land.” In a recent Instagram live session with fans, Kuti expressed his viewpoint, challenging the prevailing narrative of different Nigerian ethnic groups asserting ownership of Lagos.

Contrary to claims of ethnic ownership, Kuti argued that foreigners hold the majority of real estate and wealth in Lagos. He highlighted that the economy of Lagos and, by extension, Nigeria, is under the control of these foreign entities.

“Why are you guys shouting, ‘Lagos is Igbo land, Lagos is Yoruba land?’ Lagos is a white man’s land. Go to the Ministry of Land in Lagos and see how many per cent of land in Lagos Yoruba people own,” Kuti stated during the session.

He further emphasized the influence of foreigners in key sectors, citing the oil industry as an example. According to Kuti, the whites control the oil industry in Nigeria, despite the country being a major player in the sector.

Addressing specific properties, Kuti pointed out Eko Hotel, a prominent establishment in Lagos, questioning its ownership. He challenged the audience to consider who owns the most expensive real estate in Lagos, shedding light on the dominance of foreigners in key economic ventures.

In his commentary, Kuti also brought attention to Eko Atlantic, an extension of Eko Hotel, stating that it is owned by the same foreigners who control significant aspects of Lagos’ economic landscape.
