Heathrow Records Drop In Passenger Traffic Amid Middle East Tensions

Heathrow Airport has reported a decline in passenger traffic for April, attributing the drop largely to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

According to the airport, approximately 6.7 million passengers travelled through Heathrow in April, representing a 5.3 per cent decrease compared to the 7.1 million passengers recorded during the same period last year.

Airport officials said the decline was linked to disruptions in travel patterns caused by the conflict, which has affected key international travel routes and passenger confidence in certain markets.

Heathrow Chief Executive Thomas Woldbye said the airport had experienced short-term disruption connected to the crisis in the Middle East, although overall demand for travel remains strong.

Despite the monthly decline, Heathrow noted that transfer passenger traffic increased by 10 per cent year-on-year in April. The airport said the growth was driven by travellers connecting through Heathrow to destinations across Asia and Oceania.

Major transit hubs in cities such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi traditionally handle large volumes of passengers travelling between Europe, Asia, and Australia. However, the ongoing regional tensions have reportedly led many travellers to reconsider routes passing through the Middle East.

During the first quarter of the year, Heathrow recorded about 18.9 million passengers across its terminals, marking a 3.7 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The airport had earlier stated that part of the increase was due to temporary shifts in travel demand from other affected regions.

Heathrow is expected to release an updated passenger forecast for 2026 in June as the aviation industry continues to monitor the impact of geopolitical tensions on global travel.

Woldbye added that the airport is working closely with airlines and government authorities to ensure travellers experience minimal disruption ahead of the busy summer holiday season.
