Alicia Keys Unveils “Lifeline” Music Video from ‘The Color Purple’ Soundtrack

Alicia Keys has released the official music video for “Lifeline,” a track featured on the soundtrack of the upcoming reboot of The Color Purple. Co-produced by Keys, the video showcases the artist in rare form, delivering powerful vocals alongside a compelling visual narrative.

Directed by Diane Martel, known for her work on previous Alicia Keys hits like “If I Ain’t Got You” and “Like You’ll Never See Me Again,” the video complements the emotive essence of the song. “Lifeline” is a collaboration with Marshmello and accomplished producer Tricky Stewart, recognized for his work with artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna.

In the video, Keys passionately sings, “I can be your lifeline, stay with you ’til the sunrise, when you’re low, it don’t mean you’re alone. I’ll be by your side. Oh, I can be the reason that you don’t feel your demons, when you’re low, it don’t mean you’re alone. I’ll be by your side.”

The Color Purple reboot, featuring a star-studded cast including Ciara, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Fantasia, and Taraji P. Henson, is slated for a nationwide release on Christmas Day (December 25).

Earlier discussions surrounding the film’s casting revealed that Beyoncé and Rihanna were initially considered for lead roles. Oprah Winfrey, a key figure in producing the musical remake, explained that the search for talent shifted as the budget increased. Winfrey stated, “Once the film moved to 90 to $100 million, then everybody wanted us to bring Beyoncé. ‘Can you get Beyoncé or can you get Rihanna?’ So we’re sitting in a room saying, ‘Listen, we love Beyoncé. We love Rihanna, but there are other actors who can do this job.'”

While Beyoncé and Rihanna weren’t secured for the roles, the film boasts an award-winning cast, including Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., and Halle Bailey. The production also involves renowned figures like Steven Spielberg, Alice Walker, and Quincy Jones.

Oprah Winfrey, reflecting on her role in the original 1985 film adaptation, mentioned, “To be completely honest about it, if you were doing this film for 30 or $40 million, the interest in the cast would be very different.” Despite their efforts, the casting decisions for The Color Purple reboot have generated significant anticipation for the holiday release.
