Apple’s 2024 Strategy Shifts Focus to Wearables with Anticipated Updates and New Features

As Apple gears up for 2024, the tech giant is set to significantly emphasise its wearables business, signalling a shift away from the traditional iPhone-centric approach. Among the key areas of attention is the popular AirPods lineup, which has prompted the company to address potential confusion among consumers.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg highlights the need for clarity in Apple’s AirPods offerings, particularly with the third-gen AirPods lacking distinctive features compared to the second-gen model still available at $129. In contrast, the third-gen is priced at $179. Gurman suggests a solution could come in the form of two new fourth-gen non-Pro models featuring a redesigned look, an updated carrying case, and USB-C charging. The premium variant is expected to introduce active noise cancelling, with an updated version of the AirPods Max incorporating USB-C instead of the Lightning connector.

A notable software-based change in the pipeline for AirPods is the potential introduction of hearing aid functionality. If executed effectively, this move could disrupt the multibillion-dollar hearing aid industry, according to Gurman.

In addition to AirPods, Apple is reportedly planning a substantial overhaul of the Apple Watch in 2024. The wearable device is expected to introduce new health features to detect hypertension and sleep apnea, enhancing its utility and market appeal. A redesign for at least one model is also in the works, contributing to Apple’s wearables focus.

The anticipated release of Vision Pro, Apple’s $3,500 augmented reality (AR) headset unveiled at WWDC in June, is drawing closer. Gurman suggests that Apple will begin training retail partners on the device next month, hinting at an imminent launch. While pricing adjustments may be necessary for widespread consumer adoption, the Vision Pro headset could gain traction in the market over subsequent generations.

Beyond wearables, Apple’s 2024 roadmap includes major updates for the Mac and iPad, ensuring a comprehensive approach to product innovation. Despite the wearables-centric strategy, the annual iPhone refresh expected in September remains a key highlight, maintaining Apple’s commitment to its flagship product line.
