Biggie’s Music Catalog Reportedly Nearing Sale to Primary Wave

The song catalog of late rap legend The Notorious B.I.G. is reportedly on the verge of being sold, with music publishing company Primary Wave emerging as a key bidder.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter on February 28, the publishing powerhouse is negotiating a deal to acquire 50% of Biggie’s publishing rights, master rights, and publicity rights. Sources suggest the agreement could be finalized within the next few weeks.

Industry insiders estimate that the publishing rights – which cover the compositions rather than the sound recordings – are valued at around $100 million, while the master rights could be sold for $30–$50 million. However, other reports indicate that the total sale price may fall just below $100 million.

Primary Wave is known for managing the estates and catalogs of legendary artists, including Bob Marley, Prince, Smokey Robinson, and Sly & The Family Stone. The company specializes in revitalizing classic music catalogs and maximizing their commercial potential.

The report comes shortly after the passing of Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, who died on February 21 at the age of 78 while in hospice care in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

Following her passing, Biggie’s Invisible Bully clothing brand shared a tribute on Instagram, describing Wallace as a “matriarch” who dedicated her life to preserving her son’s legacy.

Since Biggie’s death in 1997, Wallace played a key role in managing his estate, growing its value from $10 million to over $160 million. If finalized, the deal with Primary Wave would mark a significant new chapter in the late rapper’s enduring influence on the music industry.
