Brazilian Court Orders Removal of Adele’s Song Over Copyright Dispute
A Brazilian court has ruled that Adele’s song Million Years Ago must be removed from radio and streaming platforms worldwide, following allegations of copyright infringement.
Judge Victor Torres issued the order after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused the British singer of copying elements of his 1995 album. Geraes claims that Adele’s 2015 track closely mirrors Mulheres, a 1996 classic performed by Brazilian artist Martinho da Vila.
In addition to seeking songwriting credit, Geraes is demanding $160,000 in compensation for moral damages and lost royalties.
The court also warned the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal Music of potential fines amounting to $8,000 per violation if they fail to comply with the removal order.
This legal battle highlights the ongoing complexities of copyright disputes in the global music industry. Both Adele and her representatives have yet to comment on the court’s decision.
