Burna Boy Says ‘African Giant’ Version of Him Is Gone, Blames Nigerians for Its Death
Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, known globally as Burna Boy, has declared that the iconic ‘African Giant’ persona is no longer part of who he is, stating that it was “killed” by his own people.
In a reflective message shared via the Instagram page for his upcoming album No Sign of Weakness, the singer spoke about an internal transformation and the emotional toll that came with it.
“The ‘African Giant’ Burna Boy died. His own people killed him. Then ‘Big 7’ was born to protect what was left of Burna Boy,” he wrote.
Burna Boy explained that he now grapples with a personal conflict between who he was and who he has become. He described ‘Big 7’—a new version of himself—as a protective force guarding the remnants of his emotional self.
“Burna Boy and Big 7 fight each other a lot because while Big 7 is only protecting the final and only existing piece of Burna Boy’s broken heart, the ‘African Giant’ still haunts Burna Boy,” he added.
The statement, which has stirred mixed reactions online, is seen as a prelude to the themes of personal pain, growth, and resilience expected in his upcoming project.
