Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie has achieved a career milestone as his 1984 classic Because of English debuts on the Spotify Nigeria Top 100 chart for the first time—over 40 years after its original release.
The iconic track entered the chart at No. 99, marking Chimezie’s first-ever appearance on the platform’s ranking and igniting a wave of renewed interest in his signature Zigima sound.
This unexpected resurgence follows the singer’s recent interaction with Afrobeats star Davido, who credited Because of English as a key inspiration for With You – a track from his latest album 5ive, which features Omah Lay.
Their creative connection began with a virtual exchange and soon evolved into a face-to-face meeting in Lagos. Viral videos shared on Monday, May 19, captured Davido welcoming Chimezie with admiration, praising his contributions to Nigerian music and cultural storytelling.
According to insiders, including nightlife promoter Cubana Chief Priest, Chimezie’s Lagos visit also included plans for a collaborative music video, believed to be tied to With You. In an Instagram post, Chief Priest wrote:
