Carlos Ghosn Sues Nissan For $1 Billion in Lebanon

Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn has filed a lawsuit against the company for over $1 billion, as revealed in a copy of the lawsuit seen by Reuters and filed with Lebanon’s public prosecutor.

The lawsuit, filed on May 18, accuses Nissan, two other companies, and 12 individuals of various crimes, including defamation, slander, libel, and the fabrication of material evidence.

A court session has been scheduled by the prosecutor for September 18 to commence the proceedings.

Nissan’s spokesperson stated that the company will not comment on the matter.

Carlos Ghosn, a prominent figure in the global car industry, was arrested in Japan in 2018 on charges of financial misconduct, which he vehemently denied, alleging a conspiracy by Nissan executives to obstruct a merger.

In December 2019, Ghosn managed to escape Japan by hiding in a box aboard a private jet and fled to Lebanon, where he grew up.

Ghosn had been awaiting trial in Japan for charges of under-reporting earnings, breach of trust, and misappropriation of company funds, all of which he repeatedly refuted.

Upon his arrival in Lebanon, Ghosn stated that he sought to evade a “rigged” justice system in Japan and intended to clear his name.
