China Releases Detained Mintz Employees After Two-Year Detention

China has freed all employees of Mintz Group who were detained for two years following a raid on the company’s Beijing office in March 2023, a spokesperson for the U.S.-based due diligence firm confirmed to Reuters via email.

The Chinese authorities had arrested five local staff members as part of a wider crackdown on consultancy and due diligence firms, which also targeted companies like Bain & Company’s Shanghai office and Capvision Partners. The move raised concerns among foreign investors, with business groups warning that it could damage confidence in China’s economy.

In a statement, a Mintz Group spokesperson expressed relief at the employees’ release, saying, “We are grateful to the Chinese authorities that our former colleagues can now be home with their families.”

Reports from Reuters in May 2023 suggested that Mintz had been conducting corporate due diligence, including investigations into potential forced labor in supply chains linked to China’s Xinjiang region.

Mintz Group operates 12 offices worldwide with a team of over 280 investigators, according to its official website.
